Jason Momoa Takes the Lead in Helldivers, Expanding His Video Game Movie Legacy

Jason Momoa is at it again, adding another title to his growing list of gaming adaptations. The star, known for roles in various franchises, will take on the lead in a film adaptation of Helldivers, produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Studios. This news comes from an outlet reporting that Momoa will collaborate with Fast X director Justin Lin for this project, which is set to hit theaters on November 10, 2027. Helldivers originally launched as a PlayStation exclusive in early 2015 before making its way to PC later that year. Developed by Arrowhead Games, the game follows an elite squad of soldiers battling alien threats to protect Super Earth, a fictional future version of our planet. A sequel, Helldivers 2, set a century after the original, debuted on PS5 and PC in early 2024 and later arrived on Xbox Series X. It has since sold over 20 million copies across various platforms, a significant leap from the 4 million copies sold by the first game, highlighting the sequel’s impressive impact. Unlike his previous roles in video game adaptations, Momoa won’t be portraying a specific character in Helldivers, as the game’s protagonist remains unnamed. In A Minecraft Movie, he played an original character, Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, while co-star Jack Black took on the lead role of Steve, the game’s primary character. A post-credits scene hinted at the introduction of Alex, a female character, in the sequel. Additionally, Momoa is set to embody the iconic mutated character Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter film. Fans can catch Momoa in Supergirl, but not in the familiar role of Aquaman. After his last appearance as the underwater hero in 2023’s The Flash, he’s now stepping into the shoes of the cool alien mercenary Lobo in the new DC Studios films helmed by James Gunn. From what we’ve seen in the Supergirl trailers, he fits the role perfectly, showcasing a loud, brash persona with a penchant for chaos. While the Helldivers movie won’t be released until November 10, 2027, Supergirl is set to hit theaters this summer on June 26. However, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Momoa as the charismatic villain Dante in the next Fast & Furious installment, Fast Forever, which has been pushed back to March 17, 2028.
