Jason Momoa’s action film The Pirate is undergoing a rewrite.

Last August, it was revealed that an action movie titled The Pirate is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios, based on a spec script by Will Dunn, known for his work on Ms. Marvel. The film has been described as “The Raid set on a pirate ship,” a nod to the intense 2011 thriller directed by Gareth Evans.

At that time, Jason Momoa, famous for his role in Aquaman, and David Leitch, director of Deadpool 2, were attached to the project as producers. Momoa is expected to take on a leading role, while Leitch is likely to direct. He and his wife, Kelly McCormick, are set to produce under their 87North banner, which has a reputation for films like Nobody, The Fall Guy, and Violent Night.

Since the initial announcement, updates on the movie have been sparse. However, during a conversation with an outlet about the upcoming sequel, Violent Night 2, producer Kelly McCormick provided some insight into The Pirate.

“We are rewriting The Pirate with Jason Momoa,” McCormick shared.

She elaborated, “It’s happening; he’s [Momoa] just busy. We’ve got some things in the works. It’s brewing. It’s definitely brewing, and it’s something we love. I know Amazon and Jason are excited about it. We can’t wait to get started.”

While this news may not be the most reassuring for fans eager to see Momoa on the high seas, it’s understandable given his packed schedule. Recently, he appeared in Supergirl, where he introduced his new DC character, Lobo, to the revamped DC Universe. He was also slated to star in Sony’s Helldivers movie but has since exited that project. Momoa’s IMDb page lists nine upcoming films, including Street Fighter, The Minecraft Movie: Squared, Dune Part III, and Fast Forever. With so much on his plate, let’s hope that by the time he’s ready to dive into filming The Pirate (which surely can’t be the final title), the script will be ready to roll.
