Johnny Depp May Reprise His Role as Jack Sparrow in Upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean Film

It looks like Captain Jack Sparrow isn’t quite ready to hang up his hat just yet. According to a producer involved with the franchise, Johnny Depp might be set to reprise his role as the charmingly roguish pirate in the much-anticipated sixth film of the series.

During a recent event, the producer shared, “We’re talking with Johnny [Depp], we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.” While this isn’t a wealth of information, it certainly gives fans a glimmer of hope for Depp’s return in the next installment.

However, it’s been reported that Jack Sparrow may not take center stage this time around. Instead, he could be stepping into a supporting role alongside Margot Robbie, who was announced as the lead back in 2020. The journey to bring Pirates of the Caribbean 6 to life has been rocky; Robbie mentioned in 2022 that Disney had canceled the project, although the producer later refuted that claim. Recently, buzz around the film has reignited, and the producer’s latest comments lend credence to the idea that the project might still be on the horizon.

The last film in the franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, hit theaters in 2017 and earned a solid $795.9 million globally. Depp’s legal troubles and a perceived decline in the franchise’s creative direction led Disney to effectively put Pirates of the Caribbean on hold for nearly a decade. Yet, according to the producer, it seems the ship isn’t ready to be retired just yet. Whether Depp’s return and Robbie’s leading role can breathe new life into the series remains to be seen.
