Join the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Treasure Hunt for a Chance to Unearth a $500,000 Chest Hidden in the Caribbean!

Step aside, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, because Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is stepping into the spotlight with a bizarrely extravagant skull as part of its marketing. This time, though, you can actually snag that skull for yourself—if you’re willing to fork over $40 for a treasure hunt in the Caribbean.

Ubisoft has partnered with a top treasure hunting company to create Gold & Crystal – The Lost Treasure of Edward Kenway. This scavenger hunt will challenge you to crack fifteen riddles and then physically venture to a location in the Caribbean to unearth a treasure chest filled with “pure gold coins” and a rock crystal skull embellished with an opal, valued at around $500,000.

To join the adventure, you’ll need to pay at least $40, but you can go up to $230 for some additional perks, like a notebook and a board game. The oddest part? None of the tiers, including the $230 “Pirate Lord” option, actually includes a copy of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. You’ll receive a flag and a pure gold treasure coin featuring the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag logo, but that’s about it.

Even stranger, this is a pre-order for a treasure hunt, as “all other elements of the game will be sent to you by November 9,” with the “full hunt” launching then. The Gold & Crystal FAQ mentions that the treasure hunt “is expected to last between 2 and 5 years,” leaving me puzzled about how the week’s head start from pre-ordering will provide a “decisive advantage.”

It’s definitely a unique concept, but I’m not quite sure who the intended audience is. If I wanted to live out my pirate fantasies and sail to the Caribbean for hidden treasure, I’d just pre-order Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced—oh, well played, Ubisoft. You’ve got me there.
