Jumanji: Open World Unveils First Trailer, Merging Game Characters with Reality

While the 1995 film adaptation of Jumanji sticks closely to the original children’s book, its 2017 sequel, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, takes a bold twist by transforming the board game into a video game that pulls players into its world. The only way to escape back to reality after being sucked into Jumanji is to complete the game. Despite this shift in premise, Welcome to the Jungle became a massive hit, raking in over $950 million at the box office.

Two years later, audiences flocked to theaters for the sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. Fans were eager to dive into another two hours of thrilling escapades as the crew sought to uncover the mystery behind Jumanji’s dangerous drought.

Now, nearly seven years since its debut, fans have been anxiously awaiting updates on future Jumanji films. Fortunately, there’s good news: a first look at the fifth and final installment, Jumanji: Open World, has been revealed, featuring the beloved avatars and Spencer Gilpin from Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level.

In Jumanji: Open World, the avatars unexpectedly find themselves in the real world, facing unimaginable dangers at every turn — but they have the ability to respawn. The trailer showcases a scene where Shelly is struck by a truck, only to return unscathed moments later. Fans eager to revisit the Jumanji universe need not worry, as the group eventually makes their way back.

The actors portraying the avatars will once again take on new roles, this time embodying a fresh set of humans. Viewers will see Spencer’s mom, Janice, transform into Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), discovering her newfound strength as she battles waves of enemies. Janice’s young nephew, Tyson, becomes Mouse (Kevin Hart), a pairing that has fans buzzing, given the comedic chemistry between Johnson and Hart. Spencer will be represented by Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), while the restaurant chef with a thick Eastern European accent, Donatas, joins the adventure as the one and only Shelly (Jack Black).

Jake Kasdan, who directed the previous two films, returns to helm this installment. With his involvement and the film’s inventive premise, Jumanji: Open World is poised to be another box-office triumph.

It promises to be a riot watching these quirky video game characters navigate real-life challenges, and it will be equally entertaining to see how Spencer and his family adapt when they are transported back to Jumanji.

Jumanji: Open World is set to hit theaters exclusively on Christmas Day later this year.
