Kathryn Hahn, known for her role in Marvel’s Agatha, is in discussions to portray Mother Gothel in the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s Tangled.

Disney’s live-action remake of Tangled may have found its wicked witch in Marvel’s Kathryn Hahn.

According to reports, Hahn is in discussions to portray Mother Gothel, the adoptive mother of Rapunzel who kidnapped her as a baby and kept her hidden away in a tower. Unlike other adaptations, Disney’s version features Mother Gothel exploiting Rapunzel’s magical hair, which glows and provides eternal youth. There has been no official comment from Disney regarding the casting.

Hahn has experience playing witches, having portrayed the sorceress Agatha Harkness in Marvel’s WandaVision spin-off series. She has also demonstrated her singing abilities, which will come in handy for Mother Gothel’s memorable songs like “Mother Knows Best” and the “Healing Incantation.”

This news follows the recent casting of Rapunzel and her love interest, Flynn Ryder. Teagan Croft, known for her role as Raven in HBO Max’s Titans, will take on the role of Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim, from Disney’s Zombies franchise, will play the cynical thief turned prince.

No specific plot details have been revealed yet, but if the film follows the trend of Disney’s recent live-action adaptations like Lilo and Stitch and Snow White, it will likely stay true to the original story. The 2010 animated film tells the tale of Rapunzel, who has spent her life locked in a tower with her mother, fearful of the outside world, until a thief named Flynn Ryder breaks in and leads her on an adventure of self-discovery.

There’s no word yet on when filming will begin, but the movie will be directed by Michael Gracey, known for Better Man and The Greatest Showman, with the script written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who worked on Thor: Love and Thunder.

The release date for the live-action Tangled remake has not been announced.
