Keanu Reeves Set to Star in a Unique Live-Action Lego Film
In a thrilling new development, Keanu Reeves is reportedly in discussions to star in a “live-action hybrid” Lego movie. This project would see him teaming up once again with director Josh Cooley, who previously directed Reeves in Toy Story 4, where he lent his voice to the daring toy Duke Caboom, a playful nod to Evel Knievel.
Universal has been working on this new Lego film with Reeves in mind, especially since they haven’t approved any other Lego scripts since acquiring the rights in 2020. Cooley’s involvement has been pivotal in securing Reeves for the project, especially after their successful collaboration on Toy Story 4, which grossed over $1 billion. While the necessity of this film—or the recently released Toy Story 5—might be debatable, kids certainly have their preferences.
The Lego franchise has enjoyed several successful cinematic outings, starting with The Lego Movie in 2014, which was a hit, raking in over $470 million. Although its 2019 sequel didn’t perform as well financially, it still found a fanbase. The Lego Batman Movie also struck a chord with audiences, becoming one of the most beloved interpretations of the iconic character. Plus, the Lego video games have been a hit in their own right.
Unlike previous Lego films that were primarily animated, this new project featuring Reeves and Cooley will blend live-action with animation. While specific plot details remain under wraps, it’s intriguing to consider how this mix will play out. Will Reeves portray a human navigating an animated Lego universe, similar to The Minecraft Movie? Or will he voice a Lego character that comes to life in the real world?
Given that both The Lego Movie and its sequel included characters from popular franchises like DC Comics, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings, fans can only hope for some exciting crossovers in Reeves’ Lego adventure. While licensing issues might pose challenges, the idea of Reeves interacting with Lego versions of his iconic characters—like Neo, John Wick, and Ted “Theodore” Logan—would be a blast.
Reeves has built an impressive career, showcasing his versatility from a comedic version of himself in Always Be My Maybe to taking down countless foes in the John Wick series. Up next, he’ll be voicing Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
Let the anticipation for Toy Story 6 begin!
