Killzone Set for a Comeback After More Than Ten Years

Killzone has been on the sidelines for 13 years, but whispers are surfacing that Sony might be gearing up to revive its iconic sci-fi first-person shooter franchise. Once a cornerstone of PlayStation’s first-party offerings, the series has seen a shift in focus towards open-world titles.

According to reports, Guerrilla Games is teaming up with an external studio to breathe new life into Killzone. This project is still in its infancy and could potentially be a remaster or remake of one of the earlier titles, with the original 2004 Killzone being the frontrunner. However, there’s also speculation that it could evolve into a more ambitious reboot.

In March 2025, PlayStation entered a co-development agreement with a studio known for Outriders, which is working on a project codenamed Delta that is tied to an existing PlayStation IP. This studio could be a strong candidate for helping to revive Killzone, although this connection is purely speculative at this point.

Currently, Guerrilla Games is focused on Horizon Hunter’s Gathering, a live-service spin-off of the Horizon series that has reportedly undergone a reboot following a disappointing playtest. As previously noted, a true sequel to Horizon Forbidden West is still years away, as the majority of the studio’s resources are dedicated to the upcoming multiplayer game. It remains uncertain how a collaboration with an outside studio on a Killzone remaster or reboot would fit into their development schedule.

Fans of PlayStation have been waiting for a new installment in the shooter series since 2013’s Killzone: Shadow Fall, which was a launch title for the PS4. While the first three mainline games were bundled into an anthology for the PS3, they are not available on the PS5. Even the original Killzone from the PS2 era hasn’t received the classic treatment as part of PS Plus.
