The original Kingdom Come: Deliverance has just received a “next-gen” update that enhances visuals and performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as announced by Warhorse. If you already own the game on PS4 or Xbox One, you can download the upgraded version for free right now; otherwise, it’s available on the usual storefronts for around $30.

As many anticipated, Warhorse made this announcement during its anniversary stream celebrating the first birthday of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which featured a trailer for the update and gameplay footage of lead designer Prokop Jirsa and communications director Tobias Stolz-Zwilling exploring 15th-century Bohemia.

Stolz-Zwilling mentioned that the update elevates the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Kingdom Come: Deliverance to PC Ultra standards, running natively at 2K and upscaling to 4K resolution. The new port promises “massively improved performance in demanding scenarios such as in-game cutscenes, battles, and dialogues,” with a target of up to 60 FPS. “Don’t hold me to 60 – it’s up to 60,” Stolz-Zwilling clarified. “It was our first game, and it’s a bit wonky here and there, but it’s up to 60, so that’s important.”

Launched in 2018, Kingdom Come: Deliverance received generally positive reviews but was notorious for its slow start, steep learning curve, and performance hiccups. I remember being captivated by the story, characters, and the meticulously crafted medieval world, yet I also found myself frustrated by those initial hurdles, ultimately putting the game down halfway through. Now, with 150 hours invested in the sequel, I genuinely believe it’s one of the best RPGs ever made, so I’m definitely downloading the updated original to revisit Henry’s origin story.

“For players who joined us with KCD2, if you enjoyed that, now is a great time to dive into KCD1,” Jirsa said, seemingly looking right at me. “It’s still the game we released, with the raw design principles you may recognize from KCD2. It’s raw. If you’re familiar with KCD2, that can be a good thing. You can see how we started, the beginning of our journey, and now, with the next-gen version and all the patches we’ve implemented for KCD1, it’s in a really solid state.

“It had a rough start at launch, but now it’s in great shape. It’s pretty bug-free and runs smoothly. If you want to give it a shot, now is a good time.”

Of course, a current-gen patch won’t resolve design inconsistencies that might make the early game feel sluggish, but if you have an old save, you can load it in the updated version to skip some of the hassle. Personally, I plan to start fresh since it’s been so long since I played the first game that I’ve forgotten much of the story. However, Warhorse confirmed that your old saves will transfer seamlessly. Either way, Warhorse knows how to tell a compelling story, and I’m eager to return and experience how Henry’s journey began with improved visuals and performance.
