Kingdom Hearts Fans Experienced a Historic Weekend with a Touch of Tragedy

This year’s D23 event was a treasure trove for Kingdom Hearts fans. The new trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV showcased Sora venturing into a world inspired by Pixar’s Coco, along with segments featuring playable characters Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, and the much-anticipated return of Riku, Sora’s best friend and rival. During the “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” panel, voice actors Haley Joel Osment and David Gallagher, who have voiced Sora and Riku since their teenage years, took the stage to discuss the series. In a heartfelt moment, they performed live together as Sora and Riku for the first time in the RPG’s 25-year history. However, this joyful occasion turned bittersweet just a day later with the passing of Hayden Panettiere, the original English voice of Kairi.

Osment and Gallagher reenacted the emotional ending of Kingdom Hearts II, where Sora and Riku share a moment in the Realm of Darkness. It had been a long time since they had a chance to connect, having followed separate paths since the first game. As they converse, a message in a bottle washes ashore, revealing a letter from Kairi, the third member of their trio from Destiny Islands.

As Sora reads the letter, the voices of both Osment and Panettiere overlap, and a portal to the island opens, allowing them to reunite. Although Panettiere wasn’t present at D23 and hadn’t voiced Kairi since 2010’s Birth By Sleep, her absence was palpable during the showcase. Khleo Thomas, who moderated the panel and narrated Osment and Gallagher’s scene, acknowledged the missing voices of both Panettiere and current Kairi voice actor Alyson Stoner.

“We hear the text of the letter read out loud. Sora and Kairi’s voices blend together,” he remarked. “Today, we’ll leave it to Sora.”

After the scene concluded, Thomas suggested a crowd selfie but mentioned needing one more person on stage.

“There’s only really one way to end this: We need one more special guest, don’t you think? I got Sora with me, I got Riku with me, I feel like I need Mickey with me?”

As I watched the panel with friends in our living room, many speculated that either Panettiere or Stoner would appear to represent Kairi. When someone dressed in Mickey’s Kingdom Hearts mascot costume came out instead, it was a moment of mixed feelings. I had hoped for a reunion of the original Destiny Islands trio, but the next day brought the sad news of Panettiere’s passing.

Panettiere had an impressive career with numerous credits, but her portrayal of Kairi holds a special place in my heart. As a Disney kid, I grew up seeing her in various roles, but Sora and Kairi’s farewell at the end of the first Kingdom Hearts was the first time a video game made me cry. While I appreciate Stoner’s contributions, I’ve missed the unique spirit that Panettiere brought to Kairi, even in her teenage years.

Though she hadn’t been involved with the franchise for years, Panettiere was a defining voice in some of the most significant moments of Kingdom Hearts. Without her light, the world feels a little dimmer.
