Kodak’s Charmera Camera Unveils Fresh Y2K-Inspired Designs for Collectors

The Kodak Charmera may not win any awards for its camera quality, but its affordability and playful retro designs have made it a hit among fans. Following the original model, Reto is launching a Millennium Edition that pays homage to the tech and style of the early 2000s. With seven vibrant new designs priced at $34.99 each, these cameras are likely to be snatched up quickly.

The Charmera Millennium Edition isn’t just a nostalgic makeover; it also comes with updated software featuring seven photo filters and four new frames that can be applied in real-time. While the original offered a black-and-white mode and four high-contrast color filters, the new edition adds four fresh options: coral, honey, teal, and violet.

However, the internal hardware remains unchanged from the original, which is a letdown. It still sports a 1.6-megapixel ¼-inch sensor that captures images at a resolution of just 1,440×1,080 pixels, and video recording is limited to AVI files at 30fps. This allows for thousands of photos to be stored on a microSD card of up to 128GB, but even back in 2000, point-and-shoot cameras from brands like Canon and Sony were already offering more than 2-megapixels. Reto seems to be marketing the Charmera as a fun photography gadget, but to maintain interest, it will need to go beyond just aesthetic updates in the future.
