After a 13-year hiatus, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse marks the exciting return of the beloved series.

In the latest PlayStation State of Play, Konami announced its intent to embark on a Capcom-style comeback. Metal Gear Solid 4 is finally making its way off the PS3, Silent Hill Townfall is back to continue the franchise’s momentum, and after years of anticipation, Castlevania is set to return. Even better, it’s being developed by Evil Empire, known for Dead Cells, with Motion Twin serving as the advisory studio.

Just like the revival of Silent Hill, Konami is diversifying its efforts. A post on the Castlevania website states, “This year marks the 40th anniversary since the original ‘Akumajō Dracula’ first saw the light of day. In this commemorative year, ‘Castlevania’ will be revived.” The announcement hints at “numerous new products around Castlevania.” A Bloodborne-inspired Castlevania action game would be a fantastic addition, and it’s exciting to see this direction.

The Castlevania team expressed their enthusiasm for the developers, stating, “We couldn’t think of other studios to collaborate with other than Evil Empire and Motion Twin, studios brimming with talent and passion, to deliver a new exploration-based 2D action game that captures the essence of Castlevania while bringing fresh innovation.” It seems the successful Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC served as a strong pitch, and it’s great to see it come to fruition.

Legacy of Kain is making a comeback with a retro platformer packed with M-rated pixel gore and a “lore-heavy” PS1-inspired 3D experience.
