KPop Demon Hunters star Rei Ami shared that landing the role of Zoey’s singing voice was the last piece of the puzzle, and she was “shocked” it came down to her.

“With Zoey, the only description I received was that this character needed to sing in both Korean and English, and rap at lightning speed,” Ami explained. “I got the material, which included snippets of the songs. I recorded using a very basic $40 mic. I’m not sure what this movie will achieve, but it embodies everything I love about animation. It’s a Netflix film, it’s music-driven, and it’s rooted in Korean culture. It’s everything that represents me.”

Ami lends her singing and rapping voice to Zoey, the lead rapper and lyricist for Huntr/x, while Ji-young Yoo provides her speaking voice. Before joining KPop Demon Hunters, Ami gained recognition for her feature on dark-pop artist Sub Urban’s 2020 single “Freak,” which boasts a unique circus-themed music video.

Ami continued, “I thought, ‘Alright, let me give this a shot.’ I recorded every part except for the A5 (high note) in ‘Golden.’ I told my manager, Aaron Tropf, ‘Let them know Rei cannot hit this note. She doesn’t want to hit this note.'” Despite her reservations, the note was kept in, and the song went on to chart on Billboard, earning four Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Remixed Recording.

The animated Netflix film has become the platform’s most-watched original movie ever, racking up 537 million views as of January 2026 and counting. A sequel is certainly in the works, but creating animated perfection takes time, so it likely won’t arrive until 2029.

KPop Demon Hunters is currently streaming on Netflix.
