Kratos Will Be Recast in God of War TV Series Following On-Set Injury
Deadline reports that the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of God of War has hit a significant snag: the character of Kratos will be recast following a serious injury sustained by lead actor Ryan Hurst during filming.
Hurst suffered a bicep tear while performing a stunt in late June. By that time, he had already been working on the role in Vancouver for several months, with the first production stills released back in February. Sources indicate that four episodes had been fully completed before the incident.
Production was halted immediately after the injury. Hurst underwent surgery and is currently in recovery. However, healing from a severe bicep tear can take anywhere from six months to a year to regain full strength, which poses a significant challenge for such a physically demanding role. Delaying production for Hurst’s recovery could have pushed filming back to 2027.
It appears that this timeline was more than the production teams at Sony and Amazon were willing to accept, leading to the decision to recast Kratos, with plans to resume filming in October. While the report does not specify who the new actor might be, it suggests that the four completed episodes will likely need to be reshot.
Hurst’s casting as Kratos was announced in January. He is known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, but God of War fans recognize him best as Thor from the 2022 game God of War Ragnarök. Additionally, he has a role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, where he plays Mentor, the original guide to Tom Holland’s Telemachus.
