Kwikset Launches Affordable Matter-over-Thread Smart Lock Priced Below $200

Kwikset has unveiled the pricing and release details for its Aura Reach smart lock at CES 2026 this week. This more budget-friendly Matter-over-Thread option comes in at $189, making it a solid alternative to the pricier Halo Select.

While the Aura Reach is nearly $100 cheaper than the Halo, it does forgo built-in Wi-Fi and the integrated door sensor that indicates whether your door is open or closed. The full-replacement deadbolt boasts a Grade 2 security rating, which is a step down from the Grade 1 rating of the Halo line, and features a more straightforward design.

The Aura Reach is compatible with Apple Home through Matter, but it lacks support for Apple Home Key’s tap-to-unlock feature, which is available on the Halo Select Plus model that retails for a steep $360 due to the added Apple premium.

On the plus side, the Aura Reach includes a touchscreen keypad with a backlight that activates as you approach, thanks to a handy proximity sensor. It also supports Kwikset’s hands-free auto-unlock feature, utilizing Bluetooth and geofencing to unlock as you get closer. Additionally, you can unlock it via Bluetooth using Kwikset’s app.

The lock is powered by four AA batteries, which are expected to last up to a year.

Although it lacks Wi-Fi, the Aura Reach can be controlled remotely when connected to a Matter platform like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home, provided you have a Thread Border Router, such as an Apple TV or an Echo smart speaker.

Kwikset has also introduced an optional Signal Range Boost for the Aura, which enhances Matter network performance, particularly useful if your Thread border router is situated far from your front door.

For those who prefer traditional methods, the Aura Reach can still be operated with a standard key and features Kwikset’s SmartKey Security, allowing for easy rekeying.

The Aura Reach is ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 certified and comes in satin nickel and matte black finishes, now available for $189 from various retailers.
