Kylie Minogue, the iconic Cammy, almost appeared in the latest Street Fighter game.
One of the most debated aspects of the new Street Fighter movie is its depiction of Cammy as a wild, Harley Quinn-like character. However, this isn’t the first time a live-action version of M. Bison’s Doll has graced the screen. Back in 1994, Australian singer and emerging actor Kylie Minogue took on a more game-accurate (well, relatively speaking) portrayal of Cammy in the Jean-Claude Van Damme-led Street Fighter film. Interestingly, there were discussions about her making a cameo in the latest installment before plans fell through.
In a chat with an LGBTQ+ publication, Orville Peck, the masked country singer who is stepping into acting, shared insights about his role as Vega in the new Street Fighter movie. This role suits him well since Vega is known for wearing a mask throughout the film, which aligns perfectly with Peck’s own preference for anonymity. Peck and Minogue are friends and collaborators, having released a song titled “Midnight Ride” with Diplo in 2024. During the interview, he was asked if he had reached out to her regarding the new film and if she offered any advice.
Peck revealed that at one point during the film’s development, there were efforts to bring Minogue on board for a cameo.
“Okay, I got a little tea, actually,” Peck shared. “I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, but they were trying to get Kylie to do a cameo in our Street Fighter. They were having a hard time getting a hold of her or whatever, and I was like, ‘Guys, I can text her.’ So, I was trying to orchestrate this whole thing, and it didn’t work out with timing. She was totally down to do it, but yeah, of course, I immediately told Kylie when I got cast. She said filming their Street Fighter was one of the most fun experiences of her life, and she was like, ‘I’m so excited for you to get to do that.’”
Although the initial plan didn’t pan out, Peck remains hopeful that Minogue and the current Cammy, Mel Jarson, might eventually cross paths, or that the “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” singer could return in a potential sequel.
“I’m still trying to orchestrate Mel Jarson and her to be like the two Cammys in a photo,” Peck said, making a pointing gesture.
“Oh, like the Spider-Man meme where they’re pointing at each other?” asked Cameron Scheetz from the publication.
“Exactly, yeah,” Peck replied.
“We’ll manifest that happening somewhere in the future,” Scheetz added.
“Yeah, maybe the sequel,” Peck said. “We’ll see.”
Street Fighter debuted last weekend, raking in around $51 million globally against an $82 million budget. While it seems likely to recoup its budget, a sequel doesn’t feel certain at this point, despite the film’s ending hinting at one. Overall, the movie has its flaws, but its commitment to various elements gives it an avant-garde quality that’s hard not to appreciate.
