Lanterns Set to Transform into an Exciting New Experience
The first episode of Lanterns wrapped up with a jaw-dropping twist: Hal Jordan, the original Green Lantern of Earth, has been killed. This shocking turn left fans buzzing with theories about how Hal might not actually be gone for good, especially since the series has hinted that various alien beings can disguise themselves as humans and alter their appearances. However, a recently released midseason trailer suggests that Hal Jordan is indeed very much dead.
In the new trailer showcasing the final three episodes of Lanterns, we see John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Hal (Kyle Chandler) reconnect in Rushville in 2026. Hal appears to have been incarcerated since the events of episode 5, which took place in 2016, when the Manhunter wreaked havoc on the town. Their conversation is charged with tension, and as John notes at the trailer’s conclusion, they have a long road ahead to mend their fractured bond.
Unfortunately, their reunion is cut short as Hal soon meets his demise, setting the stage for the mystery that John and Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) will likely be unraveling for the remainder of the season. Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) makes an appearance, complete with his iconic bowl cut, and Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) also gets a visit from John this time around. It looks like we might even see an episode dedicated to Hal Jordan’s origin story, similar to how episode 3 focused on John Stewart’s journey through the years.
Lanterns has emerged as one of the standout shows of the summer, boasting a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer described it as “True Detective with superheroes,” highlighting its thematic depth. The series draws parallels to HBO’s Watchmen, exploring the Black experience in America, particularly the legacy of trauma and the power dynamics at play.
New episodes of Lanterns air on Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO and HBO Max.
