Larian Believes Divinity’s Unique Approach Could Give It an Edge Over Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 has earned its place as one of the greatest role-playing games of all time since its launch a few years back, and with the upcoming Divinity title, Larian seems poised to elevate the experience even further. But what gives them such confidence? In a conversation, CEO Swen Vincke shared that the D&D tabletop origins of Baldur’s Gate 3 presented unique challenges. “One of the biggest struggles we faced with Baldur’s Gate 3 is that each class has its own distinct ruleset, making it quite complex to onboard players,” Vincke explained. While those familiar with D&D or similar games like Solasta may have felt prepared for Baldur’s Gate 3, the game still requires players to grasp various class-specific mechanics, from the Barbarian’s “rage” ability to the spell-slot system for magic users, giving D&D veterans a slight edge. “I’m surprised it worked out as well as it did,” Vincke noted. “I think when you see what we can achieve with a game designed specifically for video gaming, rather than adapted from tabletop, it’s going to be significantly better.” This suggests that even those with D&D backgrounds might find themselves on equal footing when it comes to mastering the mechanics of Divinity, but we’ll have to wait and see what Larian has in store. While Divinity doesn’t have a set release date yet, it will connect in some way to previous titles in the series. The last installment, Divinity: Original Sin 2, has just launched on current-gen platforms, including Switch 2, and offers a free upgrade for players who owned it on older systems.
