Larian hints at a likely early access release for Divinity.
In a recent chat, Larian Studios hinted that an early access launch for Divinity is “most likely” on the table. While they’re not ready to make a firm commitment, founder Swen Vincke expressed hopes of replicating the success they had with Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access phase.
Divinity made its debut at this year’s Game Awards, showcasing a chilling new trailer. Following the event, Larian team members shared additional insights about the game, confirming it will be a turn-based RPG with multiplayer features and a stronger focus on player choice. Regarding the early access approach, Vincke mentioned that Larian is keen to pursue this strategy for Divinity.
“We will most likely do early access,” Vincke stated. “I say most likely because the games industry is always changing. I don’t want to lock us into anything just yet, but it worked out really well for us. Players helped shape the game alongside us. If you look at Baldur’s Gate 3 before and after early access, the changes were significant, and we were able to make many adjustments. It’s been invaluable to our process since the first Divinity: Original Sin, so ideally, yes.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 also utilized an early access model, launching its first act in 2020. The team collaborated with the community to refine the game based on player feedback before the full 1.0 release in 2023, which ultimately snagged Game of the Year honors at the 2023 Game Awards.
However, don’t hold your breath for an early access version of Divinity just yet. Larian hasn’t disclosed a release window, although Vincke mentioned they have a timeline in mind: “We think we know when we’re going to be ready, but our track record is so bad, so we’re not going to make any promises.”
