Laurence Fishburne is set to star in Mike Flanagan’s new Exorcist film, marking his return to horror after 13 years.

According to an official announcement, Fishburne will join previously confirmed cast members Diane Lane, Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Jacobi Jupe. While details about the film remain under wraps, it promises to present a fresh story within The Exorcist universe, distinct from 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.

Produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures in collaboration with Universal Studios, this project follows Universal’s acquisition of The Exorcist franchise for a staggering $400 million in 2021.

Originally intended to launch a new trilogy and reignite interest in the franchise, The Exorcist: Believer faced a disappointing critical reception and box office performance, leading Universal to abandon those plans and bring in a new director.

Fishburne, widely recognized for his roles as Morpheus in The Matrix series and The Bowery King in the John Wick films, is making his first horror film appearance since 1997’s Event Horizon, a cult classic often described as “Hellraiser in space.” He also appeared in Predators (2010) and The Colony (2013).

The Exorcist is scheduled to hit theaters on March 27, 2027, with production set to commence in New York City this spring. For more, stay tuned for updates on the most thrilling upcoming horror films.
