In a surprising twist, Bloober Team has announced Layers of Fear 3 just in time for Valentine’s Day, despite all the hints that led fans to speculate about a revival of Rule of Rose.
Last month, the studio launched a mysterious countdown website that teased fans with clues, including a rose that reacted to mouse movements and an audio rendition of William Blake’s poem, The Sick Rose.
These rose-themed hints had many horror fans convinced that Bloober Team was reviving Rule of Rose, the controversial 2006 horror title that faced a ban in the UK due to misconceptions about its content.
However, it seems Rule of Rose will remain in limbo for now following the reveal of Layers of Fear 3. The countdown website now features a logo for the new first-person installment and a chilling tagline: “Some Things Never Leave The Walls. They Only Learn To Wait.” You can check out the eerie live-action reveal trailer above.
Creative director Mateusz Lenart describes the series as exploring the “thin line between inspiration and obsession,” with Layers of Fear 3 inviting players to experience the unraveling mind of an artist, aiming for empathy rather than judgment.
Bloober Team has been on a roll lately, with the Silent Hill 2 remake and Cronos: The New Dawn receiving acclaim from horror fans, marking a significant turnaround from their mixed history with titles like Layers of Fear, The Medium, and Blair Witch. The studio is also working on a remake of the original Silent Hill, along with an unnamed exclusive for Nintendo.
