Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered made waves at today’s Sony State of Play, but that’s not all for fans of this classic action-adventure series. We’re also seeing the return of the franchise with Legacy of Kain: Ascendance, a retro-style 2D platformer that introduces a fresh narrative.

Set to launch on March 31, 2026, Legacy of Kain: Ascendance will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC. Players can choose from three characters, including series favorites Kain and Raziel, alongside Elaleth, a vampire introduced in a recent graphic novel. Each character boasts a distinct playstyle, and the M-rated pixel gore adds a unique visual flair.

Developed by FreakZone Games, known for their solid retro action titles like the Angry Video Game Nerd game, Ascendance places a strong emphasis on storytelling. The game features a variety of anime-style cutscenes with much of the original voice cast returning, including Michael Bell as Raziel, Simon Templeman as Kain, Anna Gunn as Ariel, and Richard Doyle as Moebius.

While primarily crafted in 2D pixel art, the game also includes 3D segments reminiscent of the PS1 era, fitting for a series with such a rich history. These segments are described as “lore-heavy sequences that reward fans of the Legacy of Kain mythos,” clearly aimed at the most dedicated members of the long-standing fanbase.

Pricing details for Ascendance are still under wraps, but it will be part of the Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered Heart of Darkness Collection, priced at $45 USD. The standalone Defiance Remastered will be available for $25 USD.

If you’re a fan of retro gaming, dive into the classics with the best PS1 games of all time.
