Lego Batman: The Dark Knight’s Legacy – Key Details on the Arkham-Style Adventure

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight emerged as one of the standout surprises at last year’s Gamescom: Opening Night Live showcase. This title marks a significant shift from the typical offerings of Traveller’s Tales’ Lego games, and it feels like a long-awaited continuation of the Arkham series. With the release just around the corner, let’s dive into what we know so far.

Legacy of the Dark Knight draws substantial inspiration from Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games. Set in an expansive open-world Gotham, players will glide and grapple as Batman, taking down thugs and solving Riddler puzzles. On the ground, the mini-figure Batman zips around on a motorcycle and in the Batmobile, while combat features a rhythmic flow of punches, kicks, and parries reminiscent of the Arkham titles. After trying it out in October, I found my muscle memory from those classic games kicked in quickly. The game employs a QTE-driven combat system, allowing skilled players to navigate fights with finesse and avoid damage.

Fans of the Arkham series will recognize some of Batman’s gadgets, including the explosive gel used to breach walls. It seems Traveller’s Tales is stepping up to fill the void left by Rocksteady.

In a discussion with an outlet, Jonathan Smith, Strategic Director & Head of Development Team at TT Games, noted that Rocksteady “so definitively embodied the experience in a video game of being Batman,” which naturally influenced Legacy of the Dark Knight. However, the team aimed to create a combat system that caters to the diverse player base of Lego games. To achieve this, the game will feature various difficulty settings, ensuring that even those new to the genre can enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed.

“We have a broad audience of players of all ages, and we want to deliver a rewarding, high-quality experience that requires depth,” Smith explained. “We also need to present those systems in a way that’s legible and accessible for everyone. You can choose a low-stress, forgiving experience with clear button prompts, or ramp it up to Dark Knight mode, where you’ll need to master the systems, utilize stealth, and effectively use gadgets and upgrades to succeed. If you don’t, you’ll face setbacks, which is a fresh twist for Lego games.”

As with most Lego titles, Legacy of the Dark Knight supports co-op gameplay. One player takes on the role of Batman, while the other can choose from a rotating cast of allies. The initial lineup includes Catwoman, Jim Gordon, Nightwing, Robin, and Talia al Ghul, with Batgirl, Harley Quinn, and the Joker also confirmed as playable characters. Each character boasts unique abilities that may be essential for progressing through levels. For instance, Gordon’s foam gun can clear obstacles in Batman’s path. If you’re flying solo, you can switch between characters on the fly to utilize their skills.

The Batcave serves as Batman’s headquarters, acting as your base of operations in Legacy of the Dark Knight. Here, you can change costumes, view treasures collected during your journey, store various Batmobiles, and upgrade your gear. It’s also where you’ll manage enhancements for both Batman and your co-op partners.

Legacy of the Dark Knight pays homage to various interpretations of Batman from films, animation, and comics. The trailers have teased appearances from characters across the Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, and Matt Reeves films, ensuring that fans of all versions of Batman will find something to appreciate. The game aims to present a blocky retelling of Batman’s journey, showcasing his evolution from a troubled orphan to a vigilante who takes on criminals in the shadows. Expect cameos from the Bat Family, Alfred, and possibly members of the Justice League and League of Assassins, along with a host of iconic villains like the Joker, Bane, the Penguin, and Poison Ivy.

Recent previews have revealed even more details, including some humorous nods to the online fandom surrounding Batman. Players have spotted references to Alfred actor Michael Caine’s famous “Batman Begins” tweet from 2024, and there are hints at a potential nod to the “Surfing Joker” meme, which joked about DC Comics putting the Joker on a surfboard if they were to create an aquatic villain.

As is common with many major game releases these days, those who pre-order the $90 deluxe edition of Legacy of the Dark Knight will gain early access to the game, allowing them to start playing on May 19, three days before the official launch.

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is set to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on May 22, with a Switch 2 version anticipated later in the year.
