Lego Pokémon Card Sets Are So Impressive, We Shouldn’t Have to Pick Just One

New Lego Pokémon sets are on the horizon, including at least one inspired by the Pokémon Trading Card Game, thanks to the fan-driven Lego Ideas initiative.

Lego Ideas allows fans to pitch their own brick creations, with the community voting on which designs should be brought to life. In late May, Lego enthusiasts will choose from five potential sets that resemble 3D Pokémon cards. These designs feature beloved characters like Gyarados, legendary Pokémon such as Mew and Arceus, a single starter (Rowlet), and, curiously, Joltik. But hey, even the humble electric spider packs a punch!

The five finalists were selected from a whopping 756 submissions and are now available for viewing. Each Lego Pokémon card comes with a brief note from its creator detailing the design journey. “The head of Gyarados took me an entire week to make,” shares CreativeDynamicBuilder, who notes that the entire model consists of 1,262 Lego bricks.

“Gyarados is a mix of 2D and 3D, with his head being 3D, and his neck gradually transitioning to 2D to create the illusion that he’s emerging from the card.”

The Mew Lego set, complete with the iconic bubbles, even features an alternate design showcasing the Pokémon with its eyes open.

“The landscape draws inspiration from various routes in the main-series games, aiming to capture the sense of adventure that defines the franchise,” explains designer IsleOh.

Voting will remain open until June 11. The winning design will be reviewed by the mysterious Lego Review Board. While there’s no guarantee that the most popular card will become an actual Lego set, the quality of the entries and the current Pokémon craze could work in their favor. The Lego page mentions that the board evaluates originality, creativity, and how well the design utilizes its brick components.

Earlier this year, Lego collaborated with The Pokémon Company to launch the first official Lego Pokémon sets, featuring builds based on Pikachu, Eevee, and an impressive 6,838-piece set showcasing Kanto favorites Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise. More Lego Pokémon sets are anticipated later this year.

If the Lego Pokémon TCG set goes into production, the creator will receive credit and 1% of the total net sales. All other participants will receive five Lego sets just for entering. Honestly, why not make them all, Lego?
