Lego Unveils Its Largest Set to Date

Clear some shelf space, Lego enthusiasts! Recently, The Lego Company unveiled its largest set to date: the Lego Architecture Sagrada Família, boasting a staggering 12,060 pieces, surpassing the previous record-holder by over 1,000 bricks. This new set makes the recently announced The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith – 25th Anniversary Legacy Collection look small by comparison.

Set to join Lego’s Architecture line, the Sagrada Família set captures Barcelona’s famous basilica in stunning detail. The building instructions follow the actual construction sequence of the basilica, starting with the foundational Apse and Crypt, progressing through architect Antoni Gaudí’s original Nativity façade and the striking Passion façade, and culminating in the grand naves, Western Sacristy, and six iconic towers. The final assembly brings together the Eastern Sacristy and the Glory façade.

Lego’s designers take particular pride in the stained-glass window effect of the Sagrada Família set, and it’s easy to see why.

“We felt an immense responsibility to do justice to the Sagrada Família through this design,” said Rok Žgalin Kobe, a designer for Lego Architecture. “Our goal was to honor Gaudí’s vision with the utmost respect, capturing the rhythm of the basilica’s construction, its extraordinary complexity and ambition, and translating that into an immersive building experience. This is not only the largest Lego set ever, but a model of one of the most ambitious architectural works in the world. Balancing scale and precision while remaining faithful to a living monument that has been evolving for more than a century was a unique design challenge – and one we’re incredibly proud of.”

Given its impressive piece count and ambitious design, the price tag for the Lego Architecture Sagrada Família is set at $799.99. Pre-orders will open on June 4, with shipping expected to start on November 1.

Previously, the largest Lego set was the Lego Art World Map, which contained 11,695 pieces. Other notable large builds include the Lego Icons Eiffel Tower (10,001 pieces), Lego Icons Titanic (9,090 pieces), and the Lego Coliseum (9,036 pieces). These real-world replicas outsize the hefty licensed sets, such as the 8,278-piece The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith and the 9,023-piece Lego Star Wars Death Star, which is the largest in terms of dimensions, standing 25.5 inches (70 cm) tall and 31 inches (79 cm) wide.

Earlier this week, Lego also announced a new wave of its Smart Play sets inspired by the Pokémon franchise. While these sets are smaller, they are equally ambitious, thanks to Lego’s innovative Smart Brick technology.
