Lego Unveils Luigi-Centric Mario Kart Set for Mario Day Celebrations
Luigi has finally made his mark! The beloved green brother is set to receive the deluxe Lego Mario Kart treatment, as hinted at earlier. On March 10, also known as “Mario Day,” it was announced that the latest addition to the Lego Super Mario lineup will feature Luigi along with his Mach 8 kart.
Following the release of the Lego Super Mario Kart set featuring Mario last year, this new set boasts an impressive 2,234 pieces dedicated to Luigi. The buildable Lego Luigi figure comes with a posable head, arms, and hands, plus a stand that allows for “dynamic, race-ready angles.” Lego has designed it so that turning the steering wheel moves the front wheels, while rotating the back wheels spins the flame exhaust, creating some fun movement during play.
However, it seems the Luigi and Mach 8 set won’t include the option for his iconic Death Stare from Mario Kart 8. Instead, Luigi appears quite cheerful as he takes the wheel of the Mach 8.
The Lego Mario Kart — Luigi & Mach 8 set is priced at $179.99 (£159.99 / €179.99), which is $10 more than Mario’s set that featured 1,972 pieces. Once assembled, the Luigi set stands over 10 inches tall, stretches 16 inches long, and is 9 inches wide. It’s currently available for pre-order on lego.com and will ship on April 1, coinciding with the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in theaters.
Over the years, Nintendo and Lego have collaborated on numerous sets, resulting in more than 20 Super Mario-themed collections. These range from interactive playsets featuring Mario and Luigi to large-scale Lego Bowser and recreations of classic 16-bit Mario and Yoshi sprites. Earlier this year, the partnership expanded with the introduction of the first-ever Pokémon Lego sets.
