LG Monitors Feature Unwelcome McAfee Pop-Up Ads on Windows
A recent video from Gamers Nexus dives into an intriguing issue where connecting a new LG UltraGear monitor to a Windows 11 PC triggers an automatic installation of LG driver updates and the LG Monitor App Installer via Windows Update, all without any user notification or permission request. This app doesn’t seem to offer unique features; instead, it directs users to LG’s other applications and McAfee antivirus.
Reports of LG’s app auto-installing date back to 2024, but Gamers Nexus’s findings come on the heels of user complaints on Reddit about intrusive pop-up ads for McAfee and LG apps appearing unexpectedly in the bottom right corner of the screen, with one user experiencing this on 31 out of 32 system boot-ups.
Microsoft permits developers to link a Hardware Support App in the Windows Store that installs automatically based on device metadata. However, the description includes a cautionary note:
> The automatic installation feature does not provide a notification to the user when the app is installed. Some users may find this experience confusing and frustrating, and give your app a bad rating.
As noted by a tech commentator, Dell also auto-installs its Alienware Command Center app when an Alienware monitor is connected, but the added annoyance of notification spam is a new twist.
Users have discovered methods to prevent LG’s app from auto-installing by adjusting group policy settings on Pro versions of Windows. For those on Home editions, disabling the option to automatically download manufacturer apps and custom icons in the Advanced system settings may help.
Gamers Nexus highlights that the LG Monitor App Installer requests permission to “use all system resources” and “access your Internet connection.” Additionally, the linked LG privacy policy indicates that it collects device data, internet activity, and geolocation information—all for an app that installs without explicit user consent.
