LG Under Fire for Allegations of Adware Installation and PC Monitoring on Gaming Monitors

LG Electronics’ latest $1,200 PC monitor has sparked controversy, with users claiming it’s “wiretapping” them and installing adware that promotes McAfee trials on their systems. This issue came to light after an investigation by a tech outlet, which received numerous complaints from viewers about the monitor automatically installing McAfee adware when connected to PCs.

The investigation revealed that simply connecting the monitor to a computer triggers the installation of the “LG Monitor App Installer” through Windows Update, without any user notification. Alarmingly, this app is granted access to “all system resources” and “your Internet connection” right from the start.

Once installed, the program bombards users with offers for a “free 30-day trial” of McAfee, an antivirus software known for slowing down devices and collecting extensive user data. The situation worsens with the discovery that LG’s “consent requirement” states users must inform household members and guests that they might be recorded, in line with wiretapping and privacy laws.

Even if you avoid the new $1,200 model and stick to older LG monitors, you’re not in the clear. Tests showed that the LG Monitor App Installer is also making its way onto older models. The ad invasion isn’t limited to PCs; users have reported similar issues on LG TVs, where promotional pop-ups appear despite having all promotional options disabled in the settings.

In response to the backlash, LG stated that McAfee is not installed automatically and requires user consent. They clarified that the LG Monitor App Installer is distributed through Microsoft’s official channels and that McAfee will only be installed if users actively choose to do so.

Additionally, LG reassured users that their TVs do not collect or store ambient conversations and that the voice recognition feature is optional and only processes data when activated by the user.

In light of the situation, a Microsoft executive mentioned that they have worked with LG to disable the McAfee pop-up from their app. However, many are left feeling that an actual apology is missing from both LG for the adware installation and from Microsoft for facilitating it through Windows Update.
