Liquid Swords, the Developer Behind Samson, Files for Bankruptcy Just Six Months Post-Launch
Liquid Swords, the Swedish studio known for its recent GTA-inspired title, Samson, has declared bankruptcy following a ruling from the Stockholm District Court.
Founded by Christofer Sundberg, a former co-founder of Avalanche Studios who played a key role in the development of the Just Cause series, Liquid Swords launched in 2020. Their debut game, Samson, hit Steam on April 8, 2026.
Unfortunately, Samson has not fared well with critics, currently holding a score of 51 percent on Metacritic. Many reviews pointed out a range of bugs and performance issues at launch, prompting Sundberg to issue a heartfelt apology on Steam. He acknowledged the game’s launch state as “unacceptable” and committed to fixing the “game-breaking bugs and performance issues” in upcoming patches. Since its release, the studio has rolled out several updates to address these concerns.
As reported by a local news source, the bankruptcy order was issued on October 12. Liquid Swords had around 30 developers on staff, all of whom reportedly have not received pay since August 2026.
Despite the financial troubles, the team has continued to work diligently. Samson received an update on Steam on October 8 and was also released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles on September 21.
The future of updates for the game remains uncertain, as the administrator assigned to Liquid Swords has already listed the developer and its assets, including Samson, for sale. The bidding process is set to close on October 21, which should provide more clarity on the game’s future.
Neither Liquid Swords nor Sundberg has commented on the bankruptcy order through their social media channels.
