Lollipop Chainsaw is set to receive an official movie prequel.
Following the announcement of a new Lollipop Chainsaw video game, Dragami Games has confirmed that a live-action prequel movie is also in development. Notably, James Gunn, who contributed to the original game, is not involved in this adaptation as he focuses on his new vision for the DC Universe.
The existence of the Lollipop Chainsaw movie was revealed on September 18, shortly after the announcement of Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back at the Tokyo Game Show. The film is described as a prequel to the first game and is set to be an “R-rated action comedy” centered around the series’ main character, Juliet Starling.
As the project is still in its early stages, it currently boasts a creative and production team made up of a diverse group of international filmmakers and producers. Dragami Games expressed excitement about collaborating with such an experienced and passionate team that appreciates what makes Lollipop Chainsaw unique while also looking to innovate. At this point, no director or major Western film studio is attached to the Lollipop Chainsaw movie.
Originally launched by Suda51’s Grasshopper Manufacture in 2012, Lollipop Chainsaw is notable for James Gunn’s involvement in its writing, as he considered a full-time career in the gaming industry before directing Guardians of the Galaxy. Although the game received mixed reviews upon release, it has since gained a cult following and even inspired memorable scenes featuring Harley Quinn in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
In the early 2020s, Dragami Games acquired the rights to Lollipop Chainsaw and re-released it. The company has faced criticism for the rough launch of RePop, for not including many of the original creators in these new projects, and for making controversial comments last year. Nevertheless, it is working to expand the Lollipop Chainsaw franchise with Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back, an anime series, and now this live-action film.
At the Tokyo Game Show, Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back is already available for play.
