Long-Awaited Season 3 of This Underrated Fantasy Anime is Finally Coming!

The fantasy action-adventure web novel, Shangri-La Frontier, has made its way to the anime scene with an adaptation that premiered in October 2023. Crafted by C2C, the studio known for Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy, the anime wrapped up its second season in March of last year, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter. However, viewers will need to hold tight, as season 3 is set to debut in January 2027. While the wait is lengthy, the official website has teased a new character with a key visual to keep excitement alive.

Set in a near-future world where VR games allow players to immerse themselves in fantastical realms, the story explores the rise of glitchy, mass-produced “trash games” that protagonist Rakuro Hizutome finds entertaining. After burning out on these flawed titles, Rakuro decides to dive into the acclaimed VR experience, Shangri-La Frontier. This marks the beginning of his journey to conquer this beloved game, where he takes on the persona of Sunraku, a bird-masked avatar navigating a challenging virtual landscape.

The first two seasons, rich in exposition, establish a captivating narrative that delves into the psychology of MMORPG players. One might assume that a polished game like Shangri-La Frontier would be a walk in the park for a trash game aficionado like Rakuro/Sunraku, but he quickly faces his first major hurdle against a formidable foe, Lycagon the Nightslayer. After being cursed by this giant wolf, Sunraku suffers in-game nerfs, such as restrictions on armor and unfair treatment from other players. Fortunately, he teams up with a top-tier player, Psyger-0, who aids him in lifting the curse and progressing toward the endgame, making the journey a bit more manageable. As Sunraku forms a bond with the rare animal familiar Emul, he becomes a prime target in a virtual world filled with adversaries.

Season 2 highlights Sunraku’s evolution from a lone wolf to a player who values teamwork, as he engages in guilds that require sharing intel on monsters and Unique Scenarios—rare side quests triggered by specific conditions. This fosters innovative thinking and strategic gameplay, enabling Sunraku and his allies to tackle seemingly insurmountable challenges. Unlike typical isekai narratives, Rakuro can pause the game when he hits a wall and explore other VR titles like Nephilim Hollow for inspiration. This interaction with fellow players enriches his understanding of Shangri-La Frontier, reflecting the real-life community dynamics involved in problem-solving, battle tactics, and theorycrafting.

The highly anticipated third season will be helmed by director Hiro Oki, known for Ninja Kamui, with series composition by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, who worked on That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Toshiyuki Kubooka, who directed the first two seasons, will take on the role of chief director.
