Mad Max creator aims to produce one final film before concluding the franchise.

George Miller, the mastermind behind Mad Max, is eager to return to the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Recent reports indicate that he’s exploring the possibility of creating another Mad Max film along with a TV series before wrapping up his work on the franchise.

Sources reveal that Miller has been in talks with various studios to generate interest in a new Mad Max project. Amazon, Universal, and Sony Pictures are reportedly keen on the idea, while Warner Bros., which previously distributed the Mad Max films, has opted out of these potential ventures.

Warner Bros.’ decision to step back from the Mad Max franchise isn’t entirely unexpected. Although 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road received critical acclaim and grossed $380 million, it was estimated to have incurred losses between $20 to $40 million. The prequel, Furiosa, also struggled at the box office, earning around $174 million despite positive reviews.

If Miller successfully brings a sixth Mad Max film and a TV series to life, it would mark his final contributions to a franchise that has been around for nearly five decades. Following this, he plans to sell the entire property to the highest bidder.

Miller has already teased potential directions for the series. He previously mentioned a concept for a film titled Mad Max: The Wasteland, which would serve as a prequel to Fury Road, focusing on Max’s experiences before his capture in the film’s opening. While promoting Furiosa, he noted that if the film performs well and there’s enough interest, they would consider moving forward, but emphasized that it’s still too early to make any definitive plans. In a 2025 interview, he mentioned having a script for a new Mad Max movie, but remained non-committal, stating, “We’ll see.”

If Miller’s ambitious vision for the franchise doesn’t come to fruition, fans can always revisit Fury Road for another thrilling experience. The sight of the Doof Warrior shredding on a flame-spewing guitar never gets old.

‘The films have no strict chronology.’
