Magic Aims to Sidestep Spider-Man Issues with New Marvel Set on MTG Arena

Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond crossovers are set to continue with the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes set next month. This release will bring a variety of new products, including four Commander preconstructed decks, and fans are eager to see how it will be integrated into the digital realm.

Players will likely recall that the Marvel’s Spider-Man set, which was considered one of the less impressive releases, underwent a significant visual overhaul. This included changes to the art and card names in Magic: The Gathering Arena due to some unclear rights issues. As a result, we ended up with a bunch of spider-themed cards called Through The Omenpaths, which felt a bit off—similar to how TV shows create fictional brands that sound familiar. Many felt this stripped Arena players of the iconic characters they were expecting.

Fortunately, Wizards of the Coast has announced that the Marvel Super Heroes set will be fully represented in Arena when it launches on June 23, with preorders starting on June 2. In a recent blog update, they expressed excitement about bringing Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes and all future Marvel sets to MTG Arena.

Even more surprising is the news that Wizards will retroactively add Spider-Man cards to Arena starting June 16. This means that MTG Arena players will get to enjoy the complete experience of this release, complete with all the features they would expect from any other Magic release.

This will encompass all cards from the new set, the original source material cards, a variety of avatars, and the Spiderweb-style basic lands. Players will receive a one-time grant of the Spider-Man equivalents of their Through The Omenpaths cards, allowing them to choose their preferred card style.

For instance, if a player has Leyline Weaver in their collection, they can opt to use it or essentially reskin it as Spider Manifestation if they wish. However, they will still only have one card in their collection, just with different appearances.

While some may argue that this situation shouldn’t have arisen in the first place, it’s a welcome resolution for players.
