Magic: The Gathering Unveils 38 New Marvel Superhero Cards Featuring Hulk, Doctor Doom, and Captain America

Magic: The Gathering is set to launch its Marvel Super Heroes expansion next June, perfectly timed with the return of the Avengers to theaters and the debut of Doomsday later this year. The Universes Beyond expansions have truly shined when they enhance the trading card game with unique elements rather than merely serving as promotional tie-ins. Recently, fans got a sneak peek of what’s in store for this comic-inspired set, featuring everything from Incredible Hulk card art to innovative mechanics for Captain America.

During a recent showcase, 38 new cards were teased, showcasing a variety of Legendary Creatures, exciting spells, and stunning artwork. Among them is Captain America, a 3/2 white creature equipped with a shield counter that absorbs one instance of damage. Bruce Banner appears as a 1/1 blue creature who can transform into the Hulk, gaining a +1/+1 counter when damaged and an additional attack phase thanks to an Enrage condition.

Doctor Doom also makes an appearance as a 3/3 black creature that enters the battlefield with Doombot tokens. He allows players to draw a card and take damage at the end of their turn, and he remains indestructible as long as an artifact creature or Plan is present. Additionally, a notable reprint of Heroic Intervention has been revealed, granting “Permanents you control gain hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.” The set also includes a Horn of Greed, featuring a fittingly themed Doctor Doom art.

While the reprints nod to classic Marvel comic book art, the standout cards for me are the full-art variants of Widow-Making Infiltrator, Dig Through Time, and Elektra, Deadly Assassin. For those who enjoy Saga cards, there’s World War Hulk, which doubles a creature’s power and toughness while granting trample, and The Coming of Galactus, culminating in a formidable 16/16 black Elder Alien with flying, trample, and the ability to destroy a target land whenever Galactus attacks.

Initially, I wasn’t too excited about the Marvel set when it was first announced earlier this year. Following closely on the heels of Spider-Man and amidst a wave of other Universes Beyond crossovers, it felt like another property being stretched too thin and hastily released. However, these early card reveals are looking promising. I’m intrigued and starting to think I might not be as fatigued by Marvel as I believed. It seems I might just have to pursue Galactus after all.
