Magic’s Secret Lair Zeta Set Makes a Comeback After Troubled Launch
Magic: The Gathering’s highly sought-after Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set is making a comeback, as announced by Wizards of the Coast. This follows a chaotic pre-order experience in September that left many fans frustrated, prompting an official apology from the company. This time around, players can breathe easy, as Wizards is ensuring that everyone interested in the collaboration will have a chance to snag a set—provided they’re willing to wait.
In a recent update, Matthew Hodgins, the director of Secret Lair, shed light on the previous mishap and the steps being taken to improve the experience.
Back in early September, the launch of the special Drop on the Secret Lair website turned into a nightmare. Fans faced long wait times and many were unable to complete their purchases as the set sold out rapidly. Wizards acknowledged the situation, stating, “There’s no other way to say it. We’re incredibly sorry for the experience, and we’re trying to get to the bottom of it.” They committed to investigating the root cause, whether it was an internal issue or external interference.
On Thursday, Hodgins provided further details, clarifying that the problems were not just due to high demand. “Early in the sale, the systems supporting the launch experienced an external service disruption,” he explained. Although their processing partner acted quickly to restore stability, the disruption affected the entire sale process.
Hodgins made the decision to pause the queue when backend systems became overwhelmed. “That was the right technical decision,” he noted, as allowing customers to proceed to checkout without the ability to process orders would have worsened the situation. Initially, inventory levels suggested they could fulfill many orders, but as processing continued, it became clear that they were closer to selling out than anticipated.
As a result, many fans found themselves waiting for an additional hour and a half with little information, while only a few managed to grab the remaining stock when the sale resumed.
For those who successfully ordered a set, shipping is expected to begin on November 5 in North America and December 8 in Europe and the U.K.
Wizards is set to offer more of The Zeta Set. On December 9, there will be a 24-hour window for orders. “No setting an alarm for a specific minute and hoping,” Hodgins reassured. “If you want Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set, everyone who orders it during that window will have it fulfilled.”
The second batch of The Zeta Set is slated to ship in the latter half of 2027.
For some buyers, the reopening of orders may not be welcome news. To address this, Wizards is allowing anyone who pre-ordered The Zeta Set in September and no longer wishes to keep their order to cancel it. “If this change means Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set isn’t what you signed up for anymore, I understand completely,” Hodgins said. Aggrieved buyers can submit a cancellation request by October 9, and Wizards will process these requests without any hassle.
The Zeta Set offers a unique twist, transforming Magic’s handmade playtest cards into quirky new collectibles.
