Mahershala Ali Confirms He’s Stepped Away from Marvel’s Blade

The only thing Mahershala Ali is putting to rest anytime soon is the chance of his ill-fated MCU project ever coming to fruition. In a recent interview for his upcoming film, Ali clarified the situation surrounding Blade and why it’s officially off the table.

During the promotional tour for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel’s head honcho expressed his disappointment over the stalled development of Blade, calling it a “failure.” This prompted inquiries about the film’s status, to which Ali responded, “Not with me.” He placed the responsibility squarely on Marvel, stating, “[Marvel] had me under contract, they have billions of dollars. If they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie.”

Fans are eager for clarity on the Blade situation, and there’s a notable link between this abandoned MCU project and Ali’s new film. The director of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Bassim Tariq, was initially chosen by Marvel to direct Blade in 2021. However, he departed the project a year later due to ongoing delays, leading to Yann Demange taking over, who also exited in 2024.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother features Ali as a deeply religious hitman on a perilous mission to safeguard his children from external threats. While it may not be the Blade film fans were hoping for, it does stem from that earlier collaboration, with some echoes of the character’s essence present in the storyline. Ali mentioned that he had to choose between this project and Blade, saying, “And I’ll take this.” He believes the upcoming film aligns closely with the kind of work he wants to be recognized for. Ultimately, he moved on from the Blade discussions, suggesting that Marvel should be the one to provide answers if people are looking for them.

So what exactly is it?
