Major Skyrim mod recreating Morrowind gets its most significant update in years.

Skywind is an ambitious mod that aims to recreate The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind using the engine of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. In development since 2012, the team recently broke their silence with a substantial update video after two years of focused work.

On May 8, the Skywind team shared a new video on their YouTube channel, showcasing the progress made by over 100 volunteers since 2024. Most of the 2D and 3D art assets, along with a significant portion of the writing and voice acting, are nearing completion. Ten out of Morrowind’s thirteen regions are almost finished, and 75% of the animation work required for the mod has been completed.

However, there are still several areas that need attention. The team is working on localizing the mod into multiple languages, creating additional clothing assets, developing the Red Mountain region, mastering the voice acting, and continuing to implement quests. This is likely why the team hasn’t yet provided a release window for the mod.

Regardless of the launch date, the scale of Skywind is truly remarkable. This isn’t just a simple recreation of Morrowind using Skyrim assets; it’s a total conversion that reimagines a classic RPG within a different game engine. The extensive scope of Skywind, combined with its volunteer-driven development model, helps explain the lengthy timeline of its creation.

When the mod is finally released, it will feature content solely from Morrowind’s base game, although some preliminary work is underway for the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions by the teams that are further along in development.

Given that Morrowind hasn’t received an official remake like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion did in 2025, Skywind is shaping up to be the ultimate way to experience Morrowind when it finally arrives.
