Man Sentenced to Over 10 Years for $21,000 Pokémon Card Heist

Pokémon-related crime is on the rise, but so is the pursuit of justice for these pocket monsters. A 36-year-old man from Wilmington, North Carolina, has been sentenced to over 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to a $21,000 Pokémon card heist that took place in January.

Surveillance footage from a local video game shop showed Joseph Trevor Wilson using pepper spray and restraining an employee before making his escape. Armed with a gun, he stole both Pokémon cards and cash from the store. Wilson was apprehended five days later during a traffic stop, where authorities found a BB pistol and drugs in his possession.

The District Attorney noted that Wilson had a notebook with a Pokémon symbol drawn on the date of the robbery, along with the word “payday.” He pleaded guilty to charges including robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping, possession of cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The stolen cards were eventually recovered after two men tried to sell them at a video game store in Fayetteville. Wilson claimed he committed the robbery to settle a debt with these unnamed individuals.

This incident is part of a troubling trend of robberies driven by the high resale values of Pokémon cards. Recently, a 27-year-old man and his 69-year-old father were robbed of $150,000 worth of Pokémon cards and $12,000 in cash while packing up after a hobby showcase. They were approached in a parking lot and threatened with a gun. Just a month prior, another individual was accused of using a chainsaw to steal Pokémon cards.

The investigation is ongoing, and incidents like these, along with the persistent scalping issue, have likely led The Pokémon Company to implement stricter measures for acquiring its trading card game products. Authorities also reported that blood was found at the crime scene.
