Marathon Embraces Survival Horror in Latest Nightfall Trailer, and I’m Ready to Dive Back In!

Marathon Season 2 is just around the corner, and Bungie has given us a sneak peek of what to expect on Tau Ceti IV with a new cinematic trailer. It introduces Nightfall, the new Dire Marsh map, where players will need to channel their inner night owl as they navigate the extraction shooter’s most treacherous terrain in the dark. I’m excited, but also a bit anxious.

Nightfall is just one of the many updates coming to Marathon when Season 2 launches on June 2, but it’s likely to be the standout feature. Bungie’s latest shooter emphasizes the importance of constantly scanning the environment for new intel and potential threats. While many players are already familiar with Dire Marsh, relying on flashlights in total darkness is set to completely change how fans interact with the map.

This also opens up fresh opportunities for Bungie’s impressive sound design to deliver some serious scares. I can already imagine hearing footsteps splashing through the swamp, only to be caught off guard when I realize I have no idea where they’re coming from until it’s too late.

But that’s only part of the excitement. As hinted in the cinematic trailer, Marathon appears to be introducing a brand-new type of enemy threat on the map. The shadow that a squad of runners encounters near the end of the clip resembles a mix between a Xenomorph and Slender Man. If the trailer is to be taken at face value, Nightfall could transform Marathon into a PVPVE horror experience.

Players are already buzzing with theories about this new enemy. The most popular speculation is that we might see some kind of zombie runner. One commenter pointed out, “Check out the lore entries for ‘Class B Anomalous Material.’ I believe we’re getting Mimics (of our runners) on nighttime Dire Marsh! Either that or the fungal zombies from M2 concept art.” While player theories can often be more entertaining than the actual content, I’m starting to believe Bungie has something thrilling in store that goes beyond what the initial previews for Season 2 have suggested.
