Marathon Players Who Unintentionally Purchased the Deluxe Upgrade Will Receive the Game at No Cost
Bungie is addressing some of the issues that arose during the launch week of Marathon’s season 2. They’ve decided to extend the free-to-play period by a few extra days and confirmed that players who bought the Deluxe Edition upgrade at a discount will receive the base game for free, as many were unaware they would need to pay to unlock it later.
The situation began when a deal surfaced, allowing players to snag Marathon’s $60 version for just $14. Since the game was free to download during the first week of season 2, which kicked off on June 2, those browsing the Deluxe Edition on the PlayStation Store noticed it was only $14 more. This led some to believe they had found a clever way to get Bungie’s extraction shooter at a significant discount.
The Marathon Development Team acknowledged an issue on the PlayStation Store, where players could purchase the Deluxe Edition at a reduced price if they added Marathon to their library during the Open Play Week.
Bungie has since updated the listing on the PlayStation Store to clarify that players would still need to pay an additional $40 for the base game once the free period ended. However, those who had already purchased the Deluxe Edition and were facing a lockout were understandably upset. To resolve the situation, Bungie announced that they would provide these players with the base version of Marathon for free.
“For those of you that made this purchase before the messaging was posted on the store page, we’ll be granting you the base edition of Marathon at no additional cost,” the studio stated online on June 5. “This is in addition to the Deluxe Edition content. More info on timing will come soon.” They also noted, “Going forward, please be aware that if you’ve downloaded Marathon during the Open Play Week but have not purchased it, buying the Deluxe Edition upgrade will only grant you access to the Deluxe Edition content for the duration of the Open Play Week.”
