Marathon Season 2 Launches with a Surge in Player Activity
Marathon was set to kick off its second season with an impressive lineup of new features and quality-of-life improvements. However, things took a turn for the worse. The launch of the first seasonal patch resulted in significant server issues, forcing the game offline for several hours of unexpected maintenance.
The extraction shooter experienced its first reset, sending players back to square one while rolling out major UI enhancements, a new character class, additional weapons, a creepy new map, and numerous balancing tweaks. Additionally, the game is currently hosting its first free-to-play week, allowing newcomers to dive in from June 2 to June 9. These updates were highlighted during a recent showcase, creating high expectations for Bungie, especially after the announcement of Destiny 2’s impending conclusion and recent layoffs. Unfortunately, the launch didn’t go as planned.
As the new season kicked off at 1 p.m. EDT, players encountered various animal-themed error messages that booted them from their games. Many shared frustrating videos of snagging rare loot, only to have the servers crash, causing their hard-earned items to vanish. By around 7 p.m., Bungie took the servers down to implement a fix, rendering the game unplayable. It wasn’t until after 11 p.m. that they managed to restore functionality.
In light of these issues, the company has promised to distribute deluxe sponsored kits (pre-packaged loadouts) to players who logged in during the downtime, but the overall situation remains disappointing. Marathon has faced intense scrutiny since its announcement, with many anticipating its failure. It has been the most searched game on SteamDB for months, reflecting a keen interest in its player count and concerns about Bungie’s future under a cost-cutting Sony. The news of Destiny 2’s end, with no sequel in sight, hasn’t helped matters, and it seems likely that PlayStation is closely watching the game’s performance to gauge its future.
While the server downtime may not significantly impact those who were already planning to check out season 2, first-time players drawn in by the slick trailer might have already lost interest. The game’s active player count on Steam briefly surged to its highest since launch, only to be dampened by the bugs and downtime.
It’s unfortunate because many of the new features in the second season look promising. The new progression system, The Cradle, allows players to assign stats to their shells. Upgrades like the ability to select multiple items at once have streamlined inventory management, and balance changes aim to level the playing field. The nighttime Dire March map promises to amplify the game’s horror elements. Plus, there are potential PvE and PvP modes on the horizon.
While it’s evident that Bungie is committed to the game, Marathon needs to seize every opportunity it can, especially in today’s challenging live-service landscape. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case yesterday.
