Marathon Set to Evolve into a Dynamic Alien Survival Experience, Echoing Helldivers in New PVE Reveal

Today, Bungie announced that the highly anticipated Season 3 update for Marathon has not only been delayed but will also see the entire seasonal model phased out. However, there’s more to the story. The studio has teased the first major content drop following this shift, which features massive alien bugs.

The upcoming update, titled Symbiosis, is set to launch on December 8 and is described as “the first major step in Marathon’s next chapter.” According to Bungie, this update will introduce the game’s first permanent PvE experience, offering players a fresh way to explore, progress, and engage with the world beyond the traditional PvPvE extraction gameplay. “Symbiosis is a significant milestone for Marathon and marks the beginning of a broader evolution through March and beyond, influenced by player feedback,” the studio stated.

Accompanying the announcement was an image of Marathon Runners battling a gigantic bug-like creature that wouldn’t seem out of place in Helldivers 2, another live-service shooter. While players have faced off against insects on Tau Ceti IV before, this new threat is on a much larger scale. Bungie has promised to share more details about what players can expect soon, hinting that alien bugs are set to play a key role in the game’s future.

“Our first blog detailing Marathon’s future plans is scheduled for later this month, where we will outline how we intend to evolve Marathon into a more alien and dynamic survival experience,” the studio revealed on September 14. “We understand you’ll have questions, and we’ll respond as clearly and quickly as possible. We’ll keep you updated as we progress toward Symbiosis and beyond.”

While there has been some division within the Marathon community regarding the focus on PvP versus a shift toward a more PvE-oriented experience, there was widespread disappointment with the current season when the survival horror elements hinted at earlier turned out to be underwhelming. Players were hoping for zombie Runner Shells to battle alongside the usual UESC security droids, but that expectation was not met.

Symbiosis presents a chance to fulfill the promise of a Marathon where AI-controlled NPCs and environmental challenges take the spotlight. With Destiny 2 now in its sunset phase, there’s potential for Marathon to fill that gap. Perhaps players will finally encounter the Pfhor, or maybe it’s too late for that. Regardless, Marathon remains one of the standout games of the year for me, and I’m eager to experience whatever future iterations the developers have in store.
