Marvel announces a new movie following its San Diego Comic-Con presentation.

Marvel Studios is gearing up to dive back into the cosmic realms of the MCU with an upcoming film centered on the superhero Nova. While this exciting project didn’t make a splash during the Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, details have started to emerge.

During the event, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed new information about Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3, along with updates on Avengers: Doomsday. However, the Nova movie was notably missing from the lineup, despite earlier reports hinting at its development.

In a post-panel chat with Brandon Davis, Feige was asked about the status of the Nova film. After a publicist humorously noted that Marvel had said “not a damn thing” about it, Feige responded, “Not a damn thing, but it’s a movie.” This playful exchange marks the first official acknowledgment that a Nova adaptation is indeed in the works.

Earlier this month, it was reported that screenwriter Michael Waldron is on board to write the script for the Nova film. Waldron has a solid track record with Marvel, having created Loki, penned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and co-written Avengers: Doomsday. There was a previous attempt to develop Nova as a Disney Plus series, but that plan was ultimately scrapped.

Traditionally, Nova refers to Richard Rider, a key member of the Nova Corps, which made its debut in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film and includes notable characters played by Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, and Peter Serafinowicz. The Nova Corps serves as an intergalactic police force, with Rider standing out as one of its most prominent members.

In the comics, Rider is the last surviving centurion after the Corps suffers devastating losses at the hands of Annihilus during the Annihilation event, a pivotal storyline that laid the groundwork for the Guardians of the Galaxy narratives that inspired James Gunn’s films.

Looking ahead, Marvel has a packed schedule with Spider-Man: Brand New Day set for July, VisionQuest in October, and Avengers: Doomsday in December. Fans may have to wait until at least 2029 for the Nova movie, as Avengers: Secret Wars, Ghost Rider, and Black Panther 3 are all slated to release before it.

Welcome to the MCU, Richard Rider (maybe?)
