Marvel Clarifies That Viral Punisher Scene Features Complete Visual Effects
Earlier this week, a new Marvel special titled *Punisher: One Last Kill* dropped on Disney+. This mini-movie explores the Punisher’s story leading up to the events of *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, where the character will make his big-screen debut on July 31. Fans couldn’t help but notice a scene that appeared to have unfinished VFX, leading to some playful comparisons of actor Jon Bernthal to a PlayStation 3 version of Joel from *The Last of Us*. After the scene gained traction online, Marvel and Disney shared behind-the-scenes photos to confirm that it was indeed filmed on set.
The scene in question features the Punisher falling onto a metal crate, initially shot with Bernthal falling backward, followed by a stunt double making the actual impact. The odd CGI effect that caught fans’ attention involved a 3D model of Bernthal’s face being placed over the stunt actor, which looked noticeably off compared to the surrounding footage. The newly released set photos show Bernthal and the stunt performer switching places during filming.
While this may address some of the backlash, it also highlights that the shot itself likely wasn’t ideal if Marvel aimed to keep viewers immersed in the film. A different angle or framing could have concealed the awkward CGI without requiring Bernthal to execute the entire stunt solo. Ultimately, the on-site crew can only do so much, and the editing team has to work with the raw footage they receive. It seems this situation was a combination of missteps that led to an unfortunate viral moment.
*Punisher: One Last Kill* marks the fourth time Bernthal has taken on the role of the vigilante in the MCU, having first appeared in the original *Daredevil* series back in 2016. *Brand New Day* will be the first feature film to showcase his version of the character.
