Marvel Rivals Developers Address Controversial ‘Gooner’ Skins: ‘It Wasn’t Our Intent’

It’s been just over a year since the launch of the hero shooter Marvel Rivals, and the game has taken off, amassing a huge following. Recently, the developers hosted a fan event at the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles, where they unveiled new skins and limited-time modes inspired by the MCU Avengers films, leading up to the release of Avengers Doomsday.

Yachen Bian, the publishing and marketing lead, along with Guangguang, the creative director, participated in a group interview to discuss the vibrant community, the game’s current state, and the exciting content on the horizon.

If you’re like many players who find themselves immersed in Marvel Rivals, you’re likely aware that Guangguang has become the face of the game, thanks to his memorable intro, “Hello everyone, Guangguang here,” featured in all the Dev Vision videos on the official YouTube channel. Interestingly, this wasn’t part of the original plan.

“It was a happy accident,” Guangguang shared. “The first video was just me and Zhiyong, the lead combat designer, showcasing our work for the community. My intro was simply a reflection of our efforts. Now, ‘Hello, Guangguang here’ has turned into a delightful surprise.”

Since its debut, Marvel Rivals has been on a steady growth trajectory. With at least two new heroes and one map introduced each season, it’s evident that meticulous planning goes into each year. To maintain this flow of content, Guangguang noted that the team often works a year in advance, meaning much of the 2027 roadmap is already in place.

As new heroes join the roster each season, a conspiracy theory has emerged among players suggesting that some characters are intentionally made stronger to boost playtime. However, Bian clarified that this isn’t the case. “We didn’t do that on purpose. It’s always an accident,” he explained. Guangguang added that balancing the game is a complex process, as tweaking one element can lead to unforeseen issues elsewhere.

The team also experiments with hero abilities through limited-time modes. The Marvel Zombies mode, for instance, offered a fresh gameplay experience with characters like Blade and Jeff the Land Shark while staying true to their abilities. Similar plans are in motion for the Path To Doomsday events, which will allow players to reenact iconic scenes from the Avengers films, starting in April with moments from the first Avengers movie. Bian teased that one player will take on the role of Loki, equipped with a unique set of skills, while six others attempt to defeat him.

Marvel Rivals shows no signs of slowing down. Currently boasting 47 playable heroes, that number is set to increase with the next season, and Guangguang believes the expanding roster won’t become an issue. The community is consistently requesting new heroes, and the team is committed to delivering a true comic-book experience.

For live-service games, a continuous influx of new content is crucial, and failing to meet community expectations can lead to a swift decline. While this pressure exists, the team remains focused on their audience’s desires.

“We prioritize our audience and what they want,” Bian stated. “The gaming market is competitive, especially in the shooter genre. We’ve always concentrated on our community’s needs, which helps us maintain a strong connection with them.”

Another factor that strengthens this connection is the game’s gooner skins. Characters like Emma Frost, Squirrel Girl, and Mantis feature skins that emphasize their allure, leading to a surge of adult content inspired by them. When asked about this phenomenon, Bian humorously acknowledged, “You mean the gooner content, right?”

“We didn’t create that content intentionally, nor do we want it to be a tactic to attract users. That’s not our philosophy. While some players enjoy this aspect, others don’t. We aim to provide an authentic Marvel experience, and we’ve found a balance that resonates with our audience.”

Despite the gooner content, the passion of the fanbase is evident. This enthusiasm can lead to both positive and negative outcomes, as seen in a recent controversy surrounding a $40,000 content creator tournament. Bian commented on this, saying, “People have strong feelings about the game. For us, that’s not a bad thing. We want to serve all players and do our best. If serious issues arise, we’ll address them to maintain a healthy community, but we also let players express themselves.”

Marvel Rivals has truly become a phenomenon. The team at NetEase has discovered a successful formula for delivering a steady stream of content that keeps players, including myself, engaged. If you’ve been curious about the game or are considering returning after a break, now is a great time to dive back in, especially with the upcoming MCU tie-in events. Marvel Rivals is free-to-play and available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
