Marvel Snap Developers Announce Difficult Layoffs to Ensure Future Stability
In March, the team behind Marvel Snap shared their plans to tackle player concerns and outlined their roadmap for upcoming content. However, just over a month later, unexpected layoffs have sparked worries about the state of the company, founded by former Blizzard veterans, including ex-Hearthstone director Ben Brode. He took to the game’s Discord to address these concerns in a post on May 1.
“We had to say goodbye to a few team members yesterday, including our fantastic community manager,” Brode communicated to fans. “He truly cared about this community, and we’re going to miss him. We know many of you will, too. These decisions were tough and don’t reflect the quality of those leaving.”
The news of the layoffs first came from community manager Griffin Bennett, who previously worked on Destiny 2 and Overwatch, when he announced on X that he had been let go. “No hard feelings to my friends and colleagues at SD,” he stated. “Their future is incredibly bright.”
Despite Brode’s reassurances, the Marvel Snap community remained uneasy. There has been a prevailing sense that the game has faced challenges since it became independent, particularly after the U.S. temporarily banned TikTok, which was owned by the same parent company. The March 2026 roadmap aimed to address some of the difficulties stemming from the team taking on publishing duties and the strain of managing multiple game modes. Additionally, there are ongoing concerns about stagnant game mechanics and the balance between earned progression and pay-to-win elements.
“For those of you worried about Snap, we’re still here, still building, and still committed to this game and to you,” Brode reassured players in his recent Discord message. “The roadmap we shared in March is still in effect. These are tough decisions to ensure we can keep moving forward, not a sign that we’re winding down.”
One fan speculated that as the Marvel movie franchise ramps up this year, the costs associated with licensing the IP for the game might also be rising. “I’m not overly worried,” a player commented on the Marvel Snap subreddit. “The game needs some bug fixes, but it’s a lot of fun. I understand that things can slow down and downsizing may be necessary, but that’s just part of the gaming cycle.”
Another player, however, expressed a more pessimistic view. “Snap isn’t done, but this is definitely not a good sign,” they remarked. “Once quality drops, it’s on cruise control until the whales fall off.”
