Marvel Tokon’s Year 1 DLC hints at a cosmic adventure, teased in a recent comic.
Sony has just launched Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, but the excitement doesn’t stop there as hints about future content are already surfacing. In true Marvel fashion, a tie-in comic for Marvel Tokon was released this week, setting the stage for the tag-team fighter’s storyline. This comic not only introduces the game’s unique spin on beloved heroes but also teases potential Year 1 DLC fighters that fans are eager to speculate about.
The pages of the Marvel Tokon: First Strike one-shot, which dropped on August 5, showcase a variety of confirmed characters. However, the real intrigue lies in the appearances of several characters that haven’t been mentioned by the game’s developer, Arc System Works. Notably, Norrin Rad, the original Silver Surfer, makes an appearance as he faces off against the Promoter and the Champion, the game’s antagonists. After a fierce battle, the Champion declares that Shalla-Bal must re-enter the competition. For those familiar with the lore, Shalla-Bal is Norrin Rad’s love interest who eventually becomes the Silver Surfer herself. Fans of the MCU might recognize her from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, hinting that this version of the Surfer could soon join the fray.
In the comic’s segment featuring Norrin Rad and Shalla-Bal, we also catch a glimpse of Nova and Cosmic Ghost Rider. While one version of Ghost Rider is already confirmed for Marvel Tokon, this particular iteration—Frank Castle from an alternate universe who becomes both Ghost Rider and the Herald of Galactus—seems less likely to make the cut. Nova, on the other hand, could fit seamlessly into the game. With Marvel’s penchant for synergy and Nova slated for an upcoming MCU movie, this game could serve as a great platform to introduce audiences to the character. Additionally, Thor makes a notable appearance alongside fellow Avengers Iron Man and Hulk, both of whom are confirmed fighters in Marvel Tokon. Given Thor’s status as a major Marvel character, his absence from the current roster feels a bit odd.
While none of these characters are officially confirmed as DLC fighters, the inclusion of Phoenix Cyclops adds weight to the speculation. Arc System Works has already announced that Phoenix Cyclops will be the first of four DLC fighters in the Year 1 pass. Since one DLC character appears in the tie-in comic, it’s reasonable to assume that the other characters might also join the roster. The initial lineup of 20 characters, organized into five teams of four, suggests that the four DLC fighters could form their own cosmic team, filling a gap in the current roster. Until there’s an official confirmation from Sony or Arc System Works regarding the remaining DLC fighters, this remains a theory. However, it’s worth noting that Marvel has previously introduced characters like Mister Sinister in tie-in comics, setting a precedent for such reveals.
