Marvel Unveils Initial Details for Upcoming Zodiac Spy Series
At New York Comic Con earlier this month, Marvel Studios revealed that its upcoming live-action series will be titled Zodiac. While it’s been labeled a spy thriller, specific details about the show’s focus have been scarce. However, it seems Marvel has now assembled the writing team for Zodiac.
New insights suggest that Zodiac will revolve around spies pursuing targets with “special abilities,” according to a recent report.
Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem have been chosen as the writers for the series. Leshem is known for creating the original Israeli version of Euphoria and served as an executive producer on the American adaptation featuring Zendaya. Together, Leshem and Cohen have collaborated on several projects, including the Hulu series No Man’s Land.
The announcement of Zodiac caught many off guard, especially as Marvel’s television initiatives have been dwindling recently. Wonder Man, which debuted this year to positive reviews, had its second season canceled. VisionQuest, currently airing, is wrapping up a trilogy that began with WandaVision. Additionally, Daredevil: Born Again is set to conclude with its third season next year, meaning fans will bid farewell to Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock once more. The lack of details surrounding Zodiac is both intriguing and concerning, leaving fans with little to feel assured about. For now, it seems to mark the end of an era.
The only confirmed aspect is that Zodiac will be a spy series. In the comics, Zodiac refers to various organizations, primarily linked to villainous spy factions like HYDRA. The title card features a zodiac wheel for the “O” and incorporates the SHIELD logo into the “A,” hinting at a possible return of the notorious spy agency. However, there’s no mention of SWORD, which appears to have taken SHIELD’s place in the current MCU timeline.
Speculation suggests that Zodiac may draw significant inspiration from Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Warriors comic, which depicted an iteration of Zodiac made up of the world’s top spymasters. The plot of that comic involved HYDRA infiltrating SHIELD, a storyline already explored in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Agents of SHIELD. The comic also featured Quake (Daisy Johnson), a key character from Agents of SHIELD, leading to theories that Zodiac could serve as a revival of that series, especially after Phil Coulson actor Clark Gregg shared the announcement on social media. Production for Zodiac is slated to begin next year, so fans will have to wait a bit longer for more information.
