Marvel Unveils New X-Men Team to Take Over from the Avengers
One of the hottest topics at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend is whether Disney and Marvel will reveal the cast for the upcoming X-Men reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we wait for that news, Marvel Comics has unveiled its own exciting lineup for the new series, Maximum X-Men.
During the Marvel Comics: Avengers — Armageddon panel on July 23, it was announced that this new series is set to launch in December. As the grand Armageddon event wraps up, Earth-616 will find itself without its strongest heroes to defend it. Storm, fresh from her time with the Avengers, will step up to form a new X-team featuring beloved characters. Joining Ororo are Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice.
Christopher Yost will be taking on writing duties, with Tony S. Daniel providing the artwork. Both are seasoned veterans of the X-Men universe. Yost shared his excitement about the series, stating:
“I’ve worked on my fair share of X-Books over the years, but MAXIMUM X-MEN is everything I love about comics rolled into one— it’s underdog heroes saving the world from the biggest Avengers-level threats imaginable, it’s mind-breaking action and drama and everything people expect from X-Men, all with a classic Claremont vibe.”
The team’s first mission will involve an invasion from the Negative Zone. The announcement hints at whether this could be Annihilus returning — or something even more terrifying. Annihilus is one of Marvel’s most formidable villains and was a key figure in the 2006 event Annihilation.
One intriguing detail from the cover of Maximum X-Men #1 is the identity of Psylocke in this series. Longtime fans know that Psylocke has a complicated and controversial history. To summarize, the name has been associated with two characters — Betsy Braddock and Kwannon. For years, Betsy (a white woman) occupied Kwannon’s body (an Asian woman) after Kwannon succumbed to the Legacy Virus while in Braddock’s form. It was a convoluted situation.
In recent years, both characters have been restored to their original bodies, with Braddock adopting the name Captain Britain. As recently as 2024, Kwannon has been using the Psylocke title in the main X-Men series and her own solo adventures. However, in Maximum X-Men, Psylocke is clearly depicted as Betsy Braddock. She’s back in her own body but is once again using the title that Kwannon reclaimed. Marvel didn’t clarify this during the panel, so fans will have to wait until December to see how this plays out.
Maximum X-Men #1 is set to hit shelves on December 2.
