Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Receives Unexpected Update, Disrupting a Top-Tier Character’s Balance
It’s hard to believe that nearly 15 years have passed since the launch of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, yet on June 15, the game unexpectedly received a new update on Steam. The mere fact that a title many thought Capcom had moved on from has been patched after so long is noteworthy, but the update has also inadvertently rendered one of the game’s top-tier characters, Phoenix, nearly unplayable.
As reported by players, the unannounced update went live earlier today, and while it may not seem thrilling at first glance, the patch notes on Steam mention only “miscellaneous bug fixes” and “verified compatibility with Windows 11.”
However, players on the r/MvC3 subreddit have pointed out that the update does address some long-standing issues. For example, the notorious “Kubota Escape” bug, which forced characters to swap out with a defeated one, has finally been resolved. Unfortunately, this fix has come at the cost of introducing a new bug that disrupts Phoenix’s gameplay.

For those unfamiliar with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Phoenix has a unique “Dark Phoenix” mechanic that activates when she dies with a full 5-bar Hyper Combo Gauge. In simpler terms, while regular Phoenix is considered one of the weaker characters, transforming into Dark Phoenix elevates her to top-tier status due to significant boosts in damage, speed, and Hyper Combo Gauge recovery.
Now, however, the new patch has made her transformation into Dark Phoenix completely impossible. When Phoenix dies with a full gauge, she simply… dies. A user on the UMvC3 Discord discovered that the game now checks if Phoenix has more than 5 bars of Hyper Combo Gauge upon her death, which is impossible since the gauge caps at 5.
‼️WHY DARK PHOENIX IS BROKEN IN UMVC3 RN! YOU NEED AN IMPOSSIBLE 5+ BARS TO TURN INTO DARK PHOENIX NOW???
It seems that whoever modified the code in this update also messed with Phoenix’s function check for her Dark Install. The game USED to… pic.twitter.com/0g2xik7fb3

At this point, the community largely believes this change was unintentional, as it would be strange for Capcom to remove such a core mechanic rather than adjust it. While this has frustrated every Dark Phoenix main out there, it’s somewhat reassuring to see that Capcom hasn’t entirely abandoned Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Here’s hoping this leads to a more comprehensive balance patch down the line.
